LONG & THE SHORT OF IT – BIRDKEEPERS

I have a very exciting weekend coming up as this Saturday I’ll be one of the 6 models for Nikki and her 10th anniversary celebration for her fabulous blog Styling You. Nikki was one of the people who really inspired me to start my instagram account and ultimately my blog. I can’t wait and what I love is that I will be modelling pieces from one of my favourite brands Birdsnest. So it seemed perfect that our latest ‘Long and The Short Of It’ post is on pieces from Birdsnest’s brands Bird Keepers and Hand Picked by Birds.

It is still very chilly at the moment but for us in Brisbane the warm weather is never far away. So we have chosen layering pieces that can be taken off as it gets warmer and the two tanks we are wearing are perfect basics that would be a great addition to any wardrobe.

I thought I would just quickly remind you why Bev Iris May Style and I started these posts. Instagram is a place that I love to spend a lot of time and one that I get never ending inspiration from but it can give a very false idea of heights and sizes. These posts hopefully will help to show how clothes will look on our different shapes – Bev’s pear shape and my more hourglass shape.

We had hoped to take photos together for this post and I got up early on the Saturday morning to wash my hair and get organised. Then I found a text from Bev apologising but having to call off the planned photo shoot thanks to some prosciutto but I’ll leave that for Bev to tell.

As usual I have listed our heights, shoe size and clothing size – for this post we both stayed with our usual size for all pieces.

BEV – Iris May Style
  • Height – 5′ 8″ or 172cm
  • Shoe size – 9/40
  • Clothing size – for all these Birdsnest pieces size 14
ME – Style Loving 2
  • Height – 5’3″ or 161.5 cm (the 0.5 cm always counts)
  • Shoe size – 7/38
  • Clothing size – for all these Birdsnest pieces size 12

In this post I have tried to include a lot of photos of the different pieces – I’m a very visual person so I’m all about the photos, one of the reasons that I love instagram so much its like looking through an unlimited fashion magazine.

But before we get to the fun part I will list each piece and give you a short description.

Handpicked By Birds – Striped Knit Dress $99.95 – Knit dresses can be tricky to wear as they can tend to cling to lumps and bumps. This is something you don’t need to worry about with this dress, it has more of a swing shape to it. The top is slightly fitted which gives it a flattering line and the material is medium weight with a good amount of stretch. I think this would work really well worn with a belt and I was going to show you it worn that way but call it a senior moment I forgot to take one with me when we took photos.

Bird Keepers – The Denim Jacket $99.95 – I have never meet a denim jacket I didn’t love and this one is no exception. For me a denim jacket is a must have in any wardrobe – it works with dresses, skirts, pants and if you are game even a double denim look, but not the Britney Spears/Justin Timberlake look, always wear a different wash top and bottom this will avoid the denim suit appearance. I have multiple jackets in different washes, colours and fits. This jacket is a slightly relaxed fit and the dark wash gives it a slightly more dressy look. It works perfectly with all of the pieces we are wearing today.

Bird Keepers – The Everyday Crop Jean $99.95 – When we think of jeans we normally just think of the normal blue denim but it can be fun to mix it up with some coloured jeans. The Everyday Crop Jean comes in three colours – khaki, Ink and Grey. I think khaki is going to be a colour you see a lot in the next 6 months, its a great neutral. We have styled it with navy – this is one of my favourite colour combinations at the moment. I do still remember when the thought of wearing these colours together filled people with horror – I still have the rhyme running around in me head “Blue and green should not be seen without a colour in between”. But fashion and trends is ever evolving, I think the trick now is to make sure you wear the right shades.

Bird Keepers – The Pintuck Back Top $39.95 – We are showing you this top in both stripe and navy both are what I would consider the perfect basic and comes in 6 great colours. It has a scooped neck, relaxed fit, a flattering a-line shape, pintuck detail at the back and a high low hem. Being a shorty leaving a shirt untucked can cut me in half and make me look shorter but the front of this tank finishes just below my hips so is great for hiding the mum tum (yes my youngest is 18 but the mum tum has never gone away).

As usual just a little styling advice for my fellow shorties

  • For the jeans I have turned them up twice to give a little bit more ankle, this is something that I do with all my long pants I just find that full length just makes my legs look shorter and heavier.
  • For the curvy gal emphasising the waist is always a good thing, you can do this by adding a belt or one of my favourite ways is to tie my denim jacket around my waist. This works so well it gives me shape, disguises the mum tum and also gives a little extra butt coverage.
